Transportation Services (Non-Emergency)

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas offers transportation for your medical needs at no cost. This includes rides to and from your doctor's office, a health care facility or pharmacy. BCBSTX contracts with Modivcare™ for these services.

Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) Benefit

STAR and STAR Kids members can take advantage of NEMT at no cost. This is a covered benefit through Texas Medicaid.* Find out what the NEMT benefit covers and how to schedule a ride.

CHIP, STAR and STAR Kids members have extra help getting a ride with VAS transportation. With this VAS, you can schedule a ride to health care appointments, approved health classes, events and more.

What is Non-Emergency Transportation?

Non-emergency transportation includes rides to and from your doctor's office or a health care facility. You must be getting covered services. Modivcare will make sure your medical needs are approved before arranging the ride.

Trips must be medically necessary. Examples include rides to:

  • A doctor or dental appointment
  • An urgent care or other health care facility
  • Dialysis, diabetic screening or therapy
  • A pharmacy

Transportation is for members who have no other way to get to a medical appointment. This means you cannot walk, use mass transit, or drive yourself. If you can take yourself, you must do so.

Call 911 if you need emergency transport. (You do not need an okay from BCBSTX in the event of an emergency.)

* CHIP plan members do not have NEMT as a covered benefit. Transportation benefits for CHIP members are covered only as a VAS.
