Note: The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) previously extended its postpartum Medicaid coverage to 12 months for eligible women. The 12 months of postpartum coverage begins the month after a pregnancy has ended. Get answers to frequently asked questions about this HHSC extension. If you have questions, call our Customer Advocate Department at 1-888-657-6061 (TTY: 711).

CHIP Perinatal Coverage

CHIP Perinatal services may be an option if you/your daughter is pregnant and does not qualify for Medicaid. Learn how to apply.

If you are enrolled in the BCBSTX CHIP Perinate plan, your baby will be covered for 12 months. This coverage begins with the month he or she is enrolled as an unborn child. You do not have to pay any copays or cost-sharing while enrolled in the plan.

Instead of a primary care provider (PCP), you will have an OB/GYN as your primary doctor. You should have an initial visit with your OB/GYN within 42 days of joining the plan or within your first 12 weeks of being pregnant.

After you have your baby, you are covered for up to two postpartum doctor visits within 60 days after delivery. These visits are important to make sure you are healthy after you deliver your baby.

Check the CHIP Member Handbook to learn more about covered care for CHIP Perinate.

Well-Child Visits

Routine Checkups Give Babies a Healthy Start.

All children should have a Well-Child checkup every year, but babies need extra care. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that your baby has 6 well-child visits in their first 15 months of life. These visits are important to make sure your baby is growing and developing in the right way. Well-child visits are not for when your baby is ill. Your baby can’t tell you when something is wrong. Your child’s provider knows what to look for during these well-child visits. Call your baby’s provider to schedule a well-child visit. These visits are a covered benefit.

Transportation Services

You can get no-cost rides or mileage reimbursement to your medical appointments. This includes rides to and from the doctor’s office, a health care facility or a pharmacy. As a parent, you can bring your children with you on the ride. All rides must be approved. Learn about what is covered and how to book a ride.
