Your binder payment is the first payment you make to make your plan effective. You’ll be prompted to pay it when you’re finishing your plan enrollment. If you decided to not pay when you were submitting your application, you can make your first payment above through the First-Time Payment button or by mail when you receive your payment reminder.

When you’re searching for a new health plan, you’ll find how much each plan’s monthly payment is. That set monthly amount, or premium, is what keeps your coverage active. When you visit a doctor, you might also need to make payments for things like your copay or deductible: A copay is a set fee you’ll always pay when you visit your doctor or pick up your prescription, even after you meet your deductible.

When it’s time to pay for your doctor’s visit or health care procedure, there are a few balances that may need to be paid by you instead of your insurance: the deductible, coinsurance, and copay.

A deductible is the amount you’ll have to pay for most care before your health plan starts paying. Coinsurance, or the amount of the bill not covered by your insurance, will kick in after you meet your deductible. You may also have a copay, or a low, preset cost you’ll have to pay towards your doctor’s visit or prescription.

If you are unable to pay your bill by the due date, you will be offered a grace period. The grace period varies depending on whether you are receiving an Advanced Premium Tax Credit or APTC (subsidy) and the state of coverage.
