Special Enrollment – Turning 26
If you're age 26, in most cases, your parent can no longer keep you on their health insurance plan. That's the bad news. The good news is, turning 26 and losing your parent's health insurance coverage is a qualifying event. This means you can enroll in health insurance during a special enrollment period. But keep in mind that you need to enroll in your own health insurance plan within 60 days of your 26th birthday.
Why Get Health Insurance?
- It's the law. The Affordable Care Act requires that most people have health insurance or pay a tax penalty. The penalty for 2016 is 2.5% of your yearly household income or $695 per person, whichever is higher.
- It's affordable. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) has many health insurance choices to fit your needs and budget. And if you earn less than $46,680 a year, you may be able to get help paying for your coverage with a premium tax credit. Estimate Your Premium Credit.
- Accidents happen. Even if you are in good health, you never know when you might have an accident or get sick. A trip to the hospital can be much more costly than you might expect. Learn more about the benefits of health insurance.
- We're a name you can trust. With more than 80 years of experience, BCBSTX is the most trusted name in health insurance. Get protection and peace of mind with the coverage you need from a company that has stood by generations of Texas families.
