Lantern - A Surgery Benefit

If you work in Region 10, 11 or 14, you have a new surgery benefit beginning Sept. 1, 2025.

Do you need to schedule a surgery? Look into Lantern! This new benefit available to you and your covered dependents helps with some of the most expensive costs of having surgery. Meaning, you'll pay less out of pocket.

Lantern covers these surgeries:

  • joint replacement and revisions
  • spinal
  • bariatric (not covered on the TRS-ActiveCare HD plan)

Lantern coverage includes:

  • appointments
  • anesthesia
  • procedure and hospital fees
  • support and guidance
  • surgeon

How it Works

Schedule a surgery through Lantern and get up to a $1,500 incentive that lowers your total cost. If you have the TRS-ActiveCare HD plan, you must meet your dedutcible before you get the incentive up to $1,500.

Call a Care Advocate at 1-833-423-0960 to get started. A Care Advocate will:

  • help you understand your benefits
  • guide you every step of the way
  • provide you with resources about your care
  • check to see if a surgeon you already have is in the Lantern network
  • help you find a surgeon

Travel Benefits

Lantern helps with costs if you need to travel to a Lantern provider. Benefits include:

  • up to $100 for gas
  • $35 per person, per day for you and one companion
  • hotel and airfare, if necessary

For the TRS-ActiveCare HD plan, travel benefits aren't available until you meet your deductible.
