School-based health centers
If you’d like to help members locate convenient options for care, consider the Texas School Health Program. The Texas School Health program operates school-based health centers to assist children who may not have regular access to health care providers outside of school.
SBHCs are health clinics located onsite or near schools. They function independently but collaboratively with schools whose students they support. SBHCs must follow all Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic and Treatment (Texas Health Steps visit or Children’s Health Insurance Program well-child visit) screening and other in-network provider requirements.
Reminder: Always check eligibility and benefits to confirm membership and coverage before rendering services or recommending other providers to our members.
SBHC services: Services provided onsite typically include:
- Routine medical care for acute illness and injury
- School/sports physicals
- Immunizations
- Nutrition counseling
- Sexually transmitted disease testing and treatment
- Pregnancy testing
- Health education
Each local community decides if additional services will be provided onsite. Examples include:
- Drug and substance use counseling
- Mental health counseling
- Dental services
- Family planning
All students must have parental permission to receive SBHC services unless otherwise allowed by law. Students needing care beyond what the SBHC offers may receive specialist referrals from the SBHC or their PCP as appropriate.
