Find a Doctor or Hospital

The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) STAR Kids Plan has many network providers in the Central and Travis service areas. You have a wide choice of primary care providers, specialists, hospitals and pharmacies.

You should use in-network providers. You do not need an authorization or referral. If you prefer to see a Medicaid doctor who is not part of our network, you will need to work with a service coordinator so arrangements will be made for authorizations for your out-of-network provider. You do not need authorizations for emergency care or authorizations for in-network Medicaid providers for medically necessary services.

Please choose a primary care provider (PCP) from the provider network when you join. If you currently have and want to keep an out-of-network PCP or a PCP from another non-Medicaid plan your child may be on, we can help you do that. Please call Service Coordination so we can get all of the information on your child's non-Medicaid coverage or out-of-network PCP that you want to use. We will then get you a new ID card that shows "Commercial PCP" or “Dual Eligible” for members that have Medicare. If you would like your child's specialist as the PCP, we can help you do that. Work with your service coordinator to assign the appropriate PCP for your child.

You can call customer service for help choosing an in-network PCP or use Provider Finder®. Provider Finder® makes it easy to find a doctor or hospital in your area. Our network continues to grow. If you do not see a provider you are looking for, call us at 1-877-688-1811 and we will work with you so you can continue to see your current provider.

Keep in mind that you may need to get approval for some services before you are treated. This is called "preauthorization." BCBSTX may not cover the service if you don't get approval.

To find out if BCBSTX covers counseling referral services based on moral or religious objections, you should contact the phone number located on the back of your member ID card to speak to a Customer Advocate. If you disagree with the outcome, you can file an appeal. Check Complaints and Appeals to learn more.

If you have questions, please call the Customer Advocate Department toll-free at 1-877-688-1811 (TTY: 711).
