You should use in-network providers. These providers are contracted with BCBSTX to provide medical care to members. You do not need a referral to go to a provider in our plan network.
If you choose to go to a doctor who is not part of our network, you may have to pay for the services. Except in an emergency, the plan may not cover care that you get from an out-of-network provider. Check with the provider to make sure they are in the network before you get care. Go to Out-of-Network Coverage to learn more.
Our network continues to grow. If you do not find a provider you are looking for, call the BCBSTX Customer Advocate Department toll-free at 1-888-657-6061 (TTY: 711).
Keep in mind that you may need to get approval for some services before you are treated. This is called "preauthorization." BCBSTX may not cover the service if you don't get approval. You do not need an authorization for:
- Emergency care
- Medically necessary service from an in-network provider
