Transforming Maternal Care Where It’s Needed Most

Abide Women’s Health Services is expanding access to maternal health care for underserved women in North Texas, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas has provided funding to advance the effort.

Maternal mortality is a highly preventable health crisis, yet Texas ranks 48th overall for maternal health. The state also ranks poorly in access to prenatal care, with 22% of those who give birth not receiving adequate prenatal care.

Through a Special Beginnings® Maternal and Infant Health Initiative grant, Abide Women’s Health Services is bolstering its in-office prenatal and maternal services and expanding access through a Mobile Prenatal Clinic. The aim is to improve birth outcomes and support social needs in Dallas and surrounding rural counties that face barriers to care, such as transportation.

BCBSTX expanded the Special Beginnings program in 2023 to invest directly in organizations committed to improving health outcomes for mothers and babies statewide. In the first two years, program partners served more than 120,000 Texans with nearly 650,000 services delivered.
