Community Involvement

At Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, our concern for the communities where we live and work is a natural extension of our commitment to our customers and to building relationships with health care providers across the state. Our dedication to working alongside local organizations to improve the well-being of those in need has been an important part of our heritage since the very beginning.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas is honored to call Texas home — from Amarillo to Harlingen, Beaumont to El Paso, and Marshall to Midland — and we believe it is not only part of our heritage, but also part of our future that we seek to make a positive difference in the lives of others. Our community outreach activities include:

Healthy Kids, Healthy Families Initiative®

Healthy Kids, Healthy Families (HKHF) began as a three-year initiative designed to improve the health and wellness of at least one million children through community investments by Health Care Service Corporation and its Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans in Illinois, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.

Reaching nearly three million children within the first two years, HKHF is now a signature program of the organization and part of an ongoing commitment to invest in and partner with nonprofit organizations that offer sustainable, measurable programs to reach children and their families in areas of nutrition, physical activity, disease prevention and management, and supporting safe environments.

Major Corporate Gifts

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas made several significant corporate gifts last year. These gifts reflect our commitment to large Texas populations in our mission of promoting health and wellness. Each gift addresses a key wellness initiative important to a specific community & supports a collaborative approach to addressing a public health issue. BCBSTX provided major gifts totaling $2.4 million last year (2013) to several organizations, including the City of Houston B-Cycle, which is a bike share program. The Bike Share program, grew from 3 to 24 stations and from 18 to 200 bicycles in downtown and other Houston neighborhoods. The investment is designed to help Texas children and families, not only find more convenient transportation, but get healthier through increased, fun, physical activity.
