Health Care Just Got Easier

If you are enrolled in a Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) plan, you now have access to a health advocate*. Customer service is available 24/7**.

Health advocates serve as a personal assistant for your health care needs. You may contact a health advocate to address your medical benefits questions.

They can help you and your covered family members:

  • Get personal assistance with your health care matters
  • Understand your health benefits
  • Talk to a BCBSTX clinician about health questions
  • Sort out a new diagnosis and what to do next
  • Shop for quality, lower-cost health care

If you have medical and disability coverage through BCBSTX and are facing a possible disability claim, your health advocate can work with a clinical case manager to:

  • Help you understand your disability benefits
  • Help process your disability claim
  • With your permission, share medical information directly with the disability team to expedite the review and decision on your claim

It’s easy to reach a health advocate. Call 1-866-882-2034, weekdays 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. CT. You can also call after hours and speak with a nurse.

*Health advocates do not replace the care of a doctor and you should talk to your doctor about any medical questions or concerns.

**Customer service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week with the exception of BCBSTX observed holidays (New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and the Day After, Christmas Day).

JOHN (VO): I’ll never forget our last vacation. Our son had been recently diagnosed with diabetes, and we decided to go to the beach for a few days to relax. The weather was fantastic, the water was warm, but we had an unexpected surprise. Thankfully, my health advocate came to our rescue. John and Chloe observe Brian rubbing his neck and crying. Chloe looks into Brian's throat, feels his forehead and talks to John. Feeling worried, John pulls out his phone. We see his phone screen and the number reads "My Health Advocate -- Michelle Jones, RN”. MICHELLE: Hi John, this is Michelle. How may I help you today? Everything OK with Brian? JOHN: My family and I are on vacation. We’ve been careful to monitor Brian’s diabetes and that seems to be under control. He says his throat is sore, and it's red inside. I think he may have a fever, and he’s crying. We're out of state, so I'm not sure where we can go. I need your help. MICHELLE: I'll find you a doctor that's open now, or the nearest urgent care center. I found an in-network pediatrician nearby, and they’re open until 5 p.m. Let me call them to get you an appointment. MICHELLE: Good news! Brian has an appointment for 2:30 today with Dr. Marshall. I’ll send you the details. I’ll also contact your pediatrician’s office to have them send over Brian’s medical records. And I’ll follow up with an email showing the location of an in-network pharmacy, so you can have it just in case. JOHN: Oh, I hadn’t thought about that. Thank you so much! MICHELLE You’re welcome. I’ll contact you tomorrow to check on Brian. I hope he feels better soon. JOHN (V.O.): Thankfully, Brian’s strep throat was treated, and we still managed to have a fun time on our trip. Michelle went the extra mile in helping Brian. JOHN (V.O.): We're fortunate to have an advocate on our side, who can help us when-- and where--we need it the most. We want to be sure we can reach out and help you when you need it. Blue Cross and Blue Shield needs your contact information and how you prefer to communicate with us. Just visit the website, live chat with us via the secure app or call the number on the back of your member ID card. It’s easy!
