Saving Money on Prescription Medications

Focusing on mental health is challenging enough, with so much going on in our lives. Worrying about the cost of care shouldn’t keep you from getting help. The following tips can help you save money on prescriptions.

  • Choose an In-Network Pharmacy

Prescription costs can vary widely depending on the pharmacy you choose. According to a Consumer Reports survey, the same prescription drug’s price can differ by hundreds of dollars at different pharmacies, even within the same area.

Connect with a Personal Health Guide, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at 1-866-355-5999 or through the BCBSTX App, Apple App Store and Google Play Store to find an in-network pharmacy.

All TRS-ActiveCare plans include prescription drug benefits administered by CVS Caremark®. That means you can use one of the thousands of in-network Caremark pharmacies across the country.

  • Choose a Generic Medication

Medications taken for mental health—or any health issue—can cost you more than necessary if you don’t know to look for generic options. Generic versions are available for many popular medications. They work just like the brand-name medications and can save you up to 80%.

Generics have the same active ingredients, strength, and dosage as name-brand medications and meet the same U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standards for safety and effectiveness.

For any new prescriptions, ask your provider or pharmacist if there is a generic version. If you’re currently taking a name-brand medicine, it’s worth it to ask if you can replace it with a generic. Be sure to check CVS’s list of no-cost generic medications. no-cost generic medications. You can also check drug costs for your plan, so you know how much you’ll pay ahead of time, on the CVS Caremark site.

  • Mail-order

Using CVS Mail Order Pharmacy is a convenient, contactless way to get medications, and you may also save money. Ninety-day supplies typically cost less than 30-day supplies, and there’s no extra cost for shipping. You can also split the payments for a 90-day supply into three payments over three months.

You can call CVS Caremark at 1-844-345-4577 for more information or for help setting up a payment plan.
