Your New Member ID Card

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas is in the process of changing member ID cards to a new format. During the transition, you may receive the new card while other members may still have the older version of the ID card. However, all members will receive a new ID card by January 1, 2011.

The new member ID cards have a magnetic stripe on the back.

When you visit a doctor's office or hospital, the office staff may slide your new card through a card-reading device to get basic information about your health plan. Any member information contained in the magnetic stripe only can be read by health care providers with certain card readers, software and connectivity. The new technology should make the eligibility and benefits verification process more efficient. However, not all health care providers have card-reading devices at this time.

The new card is not a credit or debit card. There is no financial or personal medical information stored on the card.
