Update: Status of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5)

August 16, 2013 (Updated October 1, 2014)

On May 18, 2013, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) published the fifth edition of its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). While the previous version of the DSM (DSM-IV) contained ICD-9 codes, DSM-5 contains both ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes. All providers are required to continue to use ICD-9 codes until the transition to ICD-10 on October 1, 2015. Claims submitted with ICD-10 codes before October 1, 2015, will be rejected by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX).

BCBSTX will continue to publish information for providers regarding DSM-5 and the use of ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes. Watch the Blue Review for the latest news, and visit the ICD-10 page to learn more about the transition to ICD-10.
