Three-Tier Copay
With the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas Three-Tier Pharmacy Copay option, you have more choices when selecting prescription drugs. The Three-Tier Pharmacy Copay lets you choose from:
- Generic drugs
- Preferred brand-name drugs
- Non-preferred brand-name
drugs
Generic drugs are available at the lowest copay. Generic drugs are pharmaceutically and therapeutically equivalent to brand-name drugs.
Preferred brand-name drugs are available at a higher copay than generic drugs. The preferred brand-name drug tier consists of the majority of high-quality branded drugs.
Non-preferred brand-name drugs have the highest copay. Non-preferred brand-name drugs may not offer clinical advantages over other drugs in the same therapeutic category.
Not all medications have a therapeutic equivalent on the generic or preferred brand-name list. Check with your pharmacist or doctor to see if a substitute is available. Coverage for specific services will depend on your benefits program. Be sure to read your Certificate of Coverage or Benefit Booklet for further details on your program.
Mail-Order Program
If you take medications for birth control, high blood pressure, cholesterol or other long-term needs, you can also receive up to a 90-day supply at retail. In some cases, you'll pay less for the same amount of medication than at a retail pharmacy.
