Medication Safety Project: Educate Before You Medicate

You have the ability to prevent medication errors from potentially harming the health of you and your family.

A large part of preventing errors requires accurately communicating your personal medication information – including over-the-counter medicines, herbals and supplements – to your health care providers.

The Medication Safety Project: Educate Before You Medicate can help you reduce medication errors by encouraging active communication between you and all of your health care providers. Keeping a list of medications you currently take and the doses of each is an easy and effective way to accomplish this. When you visit a health care provider (including your physician, nurse or pharmacist), be sure to review and update your medication list.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) is proud to provide you two important resources to help you maintain a list of your medicines and give you more information about the importance of medicine safety.

  • My Medication Wallet Card -- A useful place for you to record up-to-date information about the medicine you are taking, immunizations, emergency contact information and more. Cut along the dotted edges and fold for easy carrying in your wallet or purse
    English

    Spanish

  • Medication Safety Brochure -- provides medication safety tips for the doctor's office, pharmacy, hospital and while at home
    English
    Spanish

  • Be Smart Be Well.TM. A new Web site that can help make you more aware of largely preventable health and safety issues such as drug safety. Visit Be Smart Be Well to meet Julie and Katie, who tell their story of use, misuse and abuse of prescription and over-the-counter drugs.

If your pharmacy benefit is provided by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, then a copy of your prescription history is available to you through our Blue Access® for Members Web site. Simply go to My Coverage, click on "Rx Drugs" and select "Prime Therapeutics".

The Medication Safety Project is brought to you in collaboration with the Dallas-Fort Worth Hospital Council and the Dallas and Tarrant County Medical Societies.
