Frequently Asked Questions - RX Drugs
What should I do if I have existing prescriptions with Medco?
When purchasing retail pharmacy prescriptions after September 1, 2008, you will want to show the pharmacist your new pharmacy ID card. If your pharmacy is a non-participating retail pharmacy, go to a Caremark participating retail pharmacy and ask the pharmacist to have your prescription transferred.
When purchasing mail order prescription refills, your existing mail service prescription refills will automatically transfer to Caremark's mail service facility in San Antonio (in most cases). When you are ready to refill your prescription, you can use the refill request option on Caremark's web site, or call 1-888-886-8490.
Why should I use mail order?
The Caremark Mail Service Program provides a convenient and cost-effective way for you to order up to a 90-day supply of maintenance or maintenance medication for direct delivery to your home with free standard shipping. By using your mail service program you minimize trips to the pharmacy while saving money on your prescriptions.
When should I use the Caremark Mail Service Program?
You should use the retail pharmacy for your immediate and non-maintenance medication needs. Use the mail service program for your maintenance medications.
What is a drug list?
A drug list is a list of preferred prescription medications that have been chosen because of their clinical effectiveness and safety. This list is typically updated every three months. The drug list promotes the use of preferred brand name medications and generic medications whenever possible.
What is a generic drug?
Generic medications are therapeutically equivalent to brand name medications and must be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for safety and effectiveness. Generic medications also cost much less than brand name medications.
A generic medicine may be a different color or shape, but is the same as the brand name medicine in:
• Strength (number of milligrams, etc.)
• Dosage form (pill, liquid, cream, etc.)
• Quality
• Active ingredient
• Effectiveness (how it works in the body).
