How is Diabetes Diagnosed?
Only a physician, by taking a blood sample from you, can diagnose diabetes. He or she may ask you not to eat for several hours before performing a fasting plasma glucose (FPG) test, commonly used to diagnose diabetes. A diagnosis of diabetes will be made if there is an FPG of 126 mg/dl or above on two different occasions, according to American Diabetes Association Clinical Practice Recommendations 1998.
