Texas Farm Bureau Insurance Announces Agreement with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas

Apr. 03, 2013

Richardson, TX — Texas Farm Bureau Insurance Companies (TFBIC) announced today that it will team up with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) to provide its members with the best health care coverage available.

"We are pleased to offer what we believe is the premier health insurance product in our state to Texas Farm Bureau members," said Kenneth Dierschke, president of Texas Farm Bureau and Texas Farm Bureau Insurance Companies.

BCBSTX and the Farm Bureau have a long history together. BCBSTX coverage was the first member service offered to Farm Bureau members in 1944, even before auto, home and life insurance services were included as services to members. The two went separate ways in 1981 before resuming the relationship this week.

"We appreciate the trust that the Texas Farm Bureau has placed in us by offering our coverage to its members," said Bert Marshall, president of BCBSTX. "We have nearly 40,000 physicians and 400 hospitals serving our members with in-network benefits. Our rates are excellent and we know that we can serve members of the Texas Farm Bureau well in communities across Texas."

TFBIC provide multi-line policies to almost 500,000 Farm Bureau member families in Texas. Products are sold by local Farm Bureau insurance agents in more than 200 Texas counties. More than 3,200 Farm Bureau members currently hold health insurance policies through the Farm Bureau.

BCBSTX, which is customer-owned, is the state's oldest and largest provider of health insurance products. The health insurer is currently training Farm Bureau's insurance agents across the state. Sales of BCBSTX products will be available immediately for new business. A transition plan for members of the existing Farm Bureau group calls for a changeover to BCBSTX on January 1, 2014.

Dierschke and Marshall said the change is designed to strengthen insurance products offered to Farm Bureau members in Texas and to widen the footprint of BCBSTX across the state.

"The change comes at a pivotal time when new laws and regulations are forcing dramatic changes in health care and forcing providers across the nation to reevaluate operations," said Jeff Tikkanen, president of Retail Markets for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas.

Dierschke says TFBIC agents will be well prepared and will become leaders in this new environment due to the new relationship with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas.
