Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas Offers a Free Tool To Help With Healthy New Year's Resolutions

New Use of E-Cards Promotes Accountability for Health Commitments

December 28, 2009

Richardson, Texas – Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) has created a new use for a common technology that can help people make healthy new year’s resolutions. eCards for HealthSM encourages users to make a specific commitment to a healthy behavior change and then share that commitment with a close friend or loved one. Now live, the program is being used by people in all 50 states, DC and six Canadian provinces.

“The idea is that people are more likely to keep a commitment if they are accountable to it,” said Margaret Jarvis, spokesperson, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas.

Research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that successful, healthy lifestyle changes are best achieved in small steps. Examples of small behavior changes encouraged by eCards for Health include cutting down on sweets, walking more, reducing stress, or scheduling an annual physical exam. After making a healthy commitment and sending an eCard, senders also receive tips related to the healthy change they have committed to, and links to more wellness information.

“ECards for Health is a great tool for making an achievable new year’s resolution and creating a happier, healthier 2010,” Jarvis added.

Losing weight is consistently the number one resolution each year and the eCards for Health library includes six cards that target small changes to help achieve weight loss. Users do not need to be Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas members.  eCards for Health is available to the general public at www.ecardsforhealth.com

The program is available to anyone interested in making a healthy change; whether in the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas plan or on the other side of the globe.  Every change that contributes to the collective health and well being of our local and global community is positive.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas — the only statewide, customer-owned health insurer in Texas — is the largest provider of health benefits in the state, working with nearly 40,000 physicians and 400 hospitals to serve 4.4 million members in all 254 counties. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas is a division of Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC), the country’s largest customer-owned health insurer and fourth largest health insurer overall.  HCSC is a Mutual Legal Reserve Company and an Independent Licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
