CHIP Perinatal Coverage

CHIP Perinatal services may be an option if you or your daughter is pregnant and does not qualify for Medicaid. Learn about applying.

If you are enrolled in the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) CHIP Perinate plan, your baby will get 12 months of continuous coverage. This coverage begins with the month he or she is enrolled as an unborn child. You do not have to pay any copays or cost-sharing while enrolled in the plan.

Instead of a primary care physician (PCP), you will have an OB/GYN. You should have an initial visit with your OB/GYN within 42 days of joining the plan or within your first 12 weeks of being pregnant.

After you have your baby, you are covered for up to two postpartum doctor visits. These visits are important to make sure you are healthy after you deliver your baby.

For more information on covered services for CHIP Perinate, see the Member Handbook.

Special Beginnings®

Special Beginnings is a program to help you better understand and manage your pregnancy. You should enroll as soon as you know you are pregnant. You will also receive personal and private phone calls from an experienced nurse all the way from pregnancy to six weeks after your child is born. Special Beginnings helps pregnant mothers and their babies by providing health education before and after pregnancy.

Once in the program, members receive:

A list of pregnancy related questions to point out any problems during pregnancy to watch for, along with information on nutrition, newborn care and other topics helpful to new parents. Members will receive different kinds of care based on how they answer the questions. Those who join will also receive a book about pregnancy and infant care. Special Beginnings staff can talk to your doctor about your needs.

If you are pregnant and would like to sign up for Special Beginnings, please call the Customer Advocate Department at 1-888-657-6061 (TTY 711).
