Infection Prevention

Surgery Patients Who Received Preventive Antibiotics One Hour before Surgical Incision

  • Antibiotics can prevent infection.
  • Patients who get antibiotics before some kinds of surgery have fewer infections.

Preventive Antibiotics are Stopped Within 24 hours After Surgery

  • Antibiotics may be given before some kinds of surgery to reduce the risk infection.
  • Antibiotics should not be taken for more than 24 hours after surgery. That's because they can cause:
    • Stomachache;
    • Diarrhea; and
    • Resistance (when antibiotics are used too much, they will not work anymore).
