Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas Provides Member Care Profiles to Help Health Care Providers Treat Members Displaced by Hurricanes

Blue Cross and Texas Medical Association Team-up to Assist Texans Who May be Forced to Leave their Homes Due to Hurricane-Strength Winds or Flood Conditions.

Richardson, Texas – Aug. 21, 2007 – As part of its emergency preparedness efforts, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) announced today that it will provide Member Care Profiles for its health plan members who are forced to flee from Hurricane Dean or any future disasters. The electronic document, called Member Care Profiles, is the payer-based record of a member’s filed medical claims including: doctor visits and diagnoses, pharmacy, lab tests, hospitalizations and ER visits.

The Texas Medical Association (TMA) is assisting in disseminating information about the member care profiles to its 42,000 physicians across the state to alert them that the information is available to help serve the needs of their patients.

“We want to ensure that any of our members who are unable to return home because of Hurricane Dean or any natural disaster and who are in need of access to their most current medical records, will have an opportunity to receive the best care possible,” says Martin Foster, president, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas. “Access to specific patient information will greatly aid the efforts of physicians and hospitals treating Blue Cross and Blue Shield members they’ve never seen before in any emergency situation.”

Physicians or members who need access to these records should contact a BCBSTX nurse at 800-1-800-441-9188 and ask for information about accessing their Member Care Profile.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas – the only statewide, non-investor owned health insurer in Texas – is the largest provider of health benefits in the state, working with nearly 40,000 physicians and 400 hospitals to serve 3.5 million members in all 254 counties. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas is a division of Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC), the country’s largest non-investor owned health insurer and fourth largest health insurer overall. HCSC is a Mutual Legal Reserve Company and an Independent Licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
