BLUE CROSS AND BLUE SHIELD OF TEXAS LAUNCHES ONLINE PROMOTION TO HELP UNINSURED
Health Insurer Joins Three Other Blues Plans in Multi-State Health Care Service Corporation Effort
Feb. 21, 2007, Richardson, Texas - As part of its ongoing efforts to provide coverage for and support outreach efforts to the uninsured in the state, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) has launched an online promotion, called Log-In and Give, to its members that will raise funds for Project Access Dallas, a program devoted to helping provide health care to uninsured residents of Dallas County.
The Log-In and Give promotion is part of a multi-state initiative known as Log-In and Give, which is being underwritten by Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC), parent company of BCBSTX and the Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans in Illinois, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. Created in 2001 by the Dallas County Medical Society, Project Access Dallas is a network of volunteer physicians, partnering hospitals, charity medical clinics, and ancillary partners who volunteer to see uninsured, low-income patients.
For every BCBSTX member who logs-in to Blue Access for Members via the BCBSTX Web site and chooses to receive electronic versions of their Explanation of Benefits (EOB) statements instead of paper versions, BCBSTX will donate a dollar to Project Access Dallas. It's expected that this year's Log In and Give campaign, which began Nov. 29, 2006, and will run to March 1, 2007, will raise approximately $65,000 overall. In previous years, the Log In and Give promotion has benefited the March of Dimes and the American Diabetes Association.
"The uninsured issue doesn't just affect those individuals without health coverage; it affects society as a whole," said Marty Foster, president of BCBSTX. "As we continue to work with employers, health care providers and the government to develop more ways to insure people, we also will continue to support community efforts to meet the needs of those who are still without coverage. Log-In and Give is one of the ways we can spread awareness of the issue and help those in need at the same time."
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas - the only statewide, non-investor-owned health insurer in Texas - is the largest provider of health benefits in the state, working with nearly 40,000 physicians and 400 hospitals to serve 3.4 million members in all 254 counties. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas is a Division of Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC), the country's largest non-investor-owned health insurer and fourth largest health insurer overall. HCSC is a Mutual Legal Reserve Company and an Independent Licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
