BLUE CROSS AND BLUE SHIELD OF TEXAS HAS TEAMED-UP WITH THE GOVERNOR'S ADVISORY COUNCIL ON PHYSICAL FITNESS AND EMPLOYEES RETIREMENT SYSTEM OF TEXAS TO KICK-OFF THE CAPITOL HEALTH FAIR

Blue Cross Challenged House and Senate Leaders to Pursue the Long-term Health Benefits of Walking, with its WalkingWorks Capitol Challenge.

(Jan. 24, 2007), Austin, Texas — Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX), the Governor’s Advisory Council on Physical Fitness, Employees Retirement System of Texas (ERS), and the Texas Academy of Family Physicians, held a Capitol Health Fair on Jan. 23, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. During the health fair, BCBSTX kicked-off its WalkingWorks Capitol Challenge for Senate and House members and Capitol staff. The WalkingWorks Capitol Challenge is a six-week competition to determine who, among the Texas legislators, can log the most steps to begin living a healthier lifestyle, between Jan. 23 and March 6, 2007.

"The goal of this six-week challenge is to enlist Texas leaders to join us in encouraging families across Texas to pursue the long-term health benefits of walking," says Paul Handel, M.D., vice president and chief medical officer, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas. "When walking becomes part of a regular routine, the benefits can range from lowering cholesterol and reduced weight to strengthening of the heart and a reduced likelihood of serious future health problems."

The winners of the WalkingWorks Challenge who log the most steps from Jan. 23 through March 6, 2007, will be awarded a certificate of achievement, plus a donation will be made by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas to the Texas Round-Up Foundation in the name of the WalkingWorks Capitol Challenge. The Texas Round-Up is a statewide initiative that strives to improve the health of Texas through education and promotion of physical activity and healthy living. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas -- the only statewide, non-investor-owned health insurer in Texas – is the largest provider of health benefits in the state, working with nearly 40,000 physicians and 400 hospitals to serve 3.4 million members in all 254 counties. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas is a Division of Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC), the country’s largest non-investor-owned health insurer and fourth largest health insurer overall. HCSC is a Mutual Legal Reserve Company and an Independent Licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
